Become a Cocktail Queen (Who magazine)

Axe the downside of making cocktails at home - too much mess on the kitchen bench, too much time spent muddling limes and too many costly and bizarre botttles gathering dust in the cupboard - with Urban Thirst's flavour bases, to which you add your alcohol of choice.  "I wanted a faster, more cost-effective process that would make cocktails easier at home," says the company's founder, New Zealand-born, former cosmo-drinking New York lawyer Kate O'Leary, now based in Sydney.

"The beauty of this is that you can contribute as much creativity as you want - it's not just opening a pre-mix."  Urban Thirst's best seller is the frozen strawberry daiquiri, though Kate herself leans towards the 1970s disco flashback of a frozen pina colada, or the choctini, a chocolate martini - "It's the great taste of chocolate, without the fat!"

Shaken, not Stirred (Ben Canaider, tasting notes)

The shake-and-make craze continues with another instant cocktail mixer from Urban Thirst.  This is the drill: you put one part Choctini Mix with one part vodka into a cocktail shaker, with lots of ice.  Shake like you have a bionic arm and then strain the mix into a chilled glass - a Martini glass adds a certain frisson to the whole experience.  The litre bottle of Choctini makes - along with your vodka addition - about 21 standard drinks, which isn't bad for $19.95.

The convenience factor is also high.  Rather than destroying most of the kitchen sink and stove top with melting chocolate and sugar syrup, all the work has been done for you in this one bottle. It's a party waiting to happen.  All I recommend is that you buy some good-quality vodka.  Anything around the $35 mark is going to be better distilled and contribute less to possible hangover effects.  But now I'm sounding like a silly old sausage, which is not the idea of this Choctini.  For stockists, visit: www.urbanthirst.com.

Cool Cocktails
From a mango daiquiri to a dry martini, cocktails are perfect for any summer function. Buying all the necessary ingredients and mixing them together can often be a time consuming, expensive process. A range of cocktail mixes and additions has been created to simplify the experience. Director of Wild Appetite Australia, Kate O'Leary said the family run company introduced the range (made in New Zealand and presold in Australia) two years ago and since then hasn't been able to keep up with demand.

Three sub ranges are offered including the cocktail slush mixes, glass cocktail range and rimming sugar - and salt. With the cocktail slush range, non-alcoholic bases are sold in strawberry daiquiri, mango daiquiri, margarita and pina colada flavours. You just add the alcoholic mixers, place them in the freezer overnight and then serve.
The mixture freezers to a sorbet-like consistency, which can be scooped from the 2 litre container straight into a serving glass.
The glass cocktail range comes in the apple martini, cosmopolitan and mojito flavours. Alcohol is added to the mixers, which are then able to be served straight away.
"The pineapple and strawberry sugar is a nice add on and when you drink the cocktail through the sugar it adds to the experience".

The Slush Hour
Since their launch, last September, Urban Thirst's slush mixes have gone down a treat. Now buyers who have been making frozen slushy cocktails for the mixes, can complete the presentation with three new lines; a rimming salt and rimming sugar in strawberry or pineapple flavours. The range of 1.5 litre slush mixes is margarita, pina colada and strawberry daiquiri.

What's Hot in the World of Drinking (Ben Canaider)
A 1.5L bucket of cocktail blend might not seem quite James Bond, but it is a good way to put people in a more generous frame of mind. The protocol is simple, open the plastic bucket and add to its cocktail flavouring ingredients 375 ml vodka, gin or whatever white spirit the bucket's ingredients best suit. Stir it about, re-seal the bucket and throw it in the freezer overnight. The next day, remove the bucket a few minutes before the desired consumption time and ladle out the slushie - strawberry daiquiri, margarita and pain colada. Dare I say it, an ideal Christmas gift.
